Popcorn Time

I was at work one day when a work mate of mine asked me if Foxtel was worth it. I told her it depended on a lot of things like what she needed and wanted it for and there were a lot of providers on the market that offered lots of different things at different prices. Then she mentioned she had been using 'Popcorn Time' and said she had access to lots of things like both movies and TV series. She said it was free and had downloaded it to her computer and linked it with her TV. I wasn't able to tell her at the time if she was better off just using Popcorn time but I definitely did wonder. I had to check this out.

I went on to the App Store, trying to work out which one it was, looking for a free version and I wasn't completely convinced I had found the right one. Stubborn as I am, instead of making sense and asking her I trolled a few versions on my phone (not my PC) and checked out the first free one that seemed to offer what she said and I may have just found it. The version I'm using at the moment has both free and paid versions. I haven't trailed the paid version yet and I probably won't but there's a bit to offer on the standard version that's enough to leave me satisfied to use it at least every now and then.

The app apparently provides options for movies, live TV and documentaries. Big fat zero on the live TV option for me. Choosing this option prompted me to download another app. No thanks. News and documentaries options are not yet trialled. Movie menu worked fine.

I got a bit excited when I saw the movies I got to choose from at first. I'd been watching a few series end to end recently and I hadn't got around yet to watching a few of these. I had a bit of delight at first at thinking I could watch them all for free and set on out to see if I could. I tried to watch a few movies but I got a pop up message on some of them about reaching the maximum download limit or something. I wasn't sure if this meant there was too many total user views so far or if it implied I had watched too many in total (big fat zero) or if the standard version I was using limited me not to watch some of them. If I could just summarise how I felt I guess I would just say I had a moment where I suddenly realised I still hadn't seen 'Kong', tried to, couldn't and now I have a constant reminder that I still haven't....

Damn...

Determined not to lose hope just yet I clicked on some others I still had not seen and was able to watch 'Rogue One' and 'The Ghost in the Shell' so far. I was pretty pleased I could do this. It is a free app and it was definite that I could indeed watch some new'ish movies for free. I might not have had the full selection I wanted but it was still worth my while. Loving free stuff right now. Sometimes is all the teeny little nice things in life that keep us going.

So... unless the PC version is a million times better maybe I can answer in comparison now? Sort of, maybe? Having both now I guess I would say that Popcorn is more than better value for money. It's free but it's not utter and total crap. I wouldn't recommend the app for every man and his dog and in comparison Foxtel isn't for everyone. Foxtel is a review in its own that I won't be doing but if you are looking at access on demand by comparison you won't have as much access as Foxtel by far, at least if you use the phone app anyway.

Popcorn Time definitely is worth checking out though, as limited as it's selection is. Have a look and try it out. You may just like it. I'll be keeping mine thanks and mmmmm I feel like some popcorn again... tasty. Maybe I'll be clicking on Kong forever... or maybe I'll just watch it on Foxtel. I am paying for it.

You do what you need to do.
