Memorable Movie Scenes: Big Fish
Not sure how I haven't written about this one yet. I think about this one a lot. I often think about how we hear about a story, experience or person and how our views or version of how we see it can lead us to think about them differently and even doubt a little bit about them. I suppose when telling a story it can also be exciting to embellish it a little too. When someone tells a bit of a story we can't help but wonder about what maybe they have left out or if it really happened like that.
Lets start with the official trailer
In 'Big Fish' we take a bit of that journey following "Will" as he returns to his home town to see his dying father. As we find out early on, Will's views and relationship with his father is under strain from Will's view because of the many stories his father told him as a child, to a point where Will is both frustrated and impatient to hear them. With his father's death approaching, and in his frustration he sets out to 'find the truth' we hear a bit more about the tales that were told. His father also tells his story about an extraordinary journey, the people he said he met and all the things he said came to be.
Will's father (Edward) sets out to leave town with his new friend Karl, seeing himself as a big fish in a small pond. Their journey starts with a fork in the road. Edward chooses to take the shortcut.
With his father's death approaching and in his frustration he sets out to 'find the truth'. The movie follows his father tale-like perspective as he is asked how he met his wife. The movie goes onward like this, he makes a goal to know more about his future wife and decides what he needs to do to meet her again. He meets other people after this, which is a time William remembers the most about his life, that his father is not there. It's this part of the story that William finds the hardest to believe. He perceives his father as a man that was an absent parent at times ,and he feels that his father has been hiding something from his family, a feeling he has been harbouring for a very long time.
My favourite part? The end, at the funeral ...it's the part that made the movie the most memorable for me but how do I show that without spoiling the ending completely? The people he has met along the way return to see him off. It's pretty short but makes the most sense if you have seen the whole movie and already have a grip on who the other characters are. It's hard to see its value if you haven't watched the rest. That bit there that's my fave but yes if I post it now without you seeing the rest it won't really click for you.
So yes... here's a movie I liked very much. A movie about a person who told tales, was just a normal person but a person for who many things did happen. The book is a little bit different so I guess in a way I like the movie better because of the differences. It's a little bit nicer for the ending about the man.
Big Fish.. (the movie) A little bit of fantasy and whimsy, as Directed by Tim Burton.
I hope you watch it
